Kari Ikonen
Karikko
Karikko consists of Kari Ikonen's brilliant compositions for different ensembles. The album starts with a prize-winning composition Luoto (Jazz Composers Alliance/Julius Hemphill Composition Award, USA 2000), which is, like the conclusion-track Ankkuri, performed by a horn quintet (as, ts, bs, fh/tpt, tbn). There are different quartets and quintets on tracks Kuru, Keijukki, Erakko, Unia and Epäkkään kosto, while Oraakkeli and Yö Kaaliossa are written for a ten-person mini-bigband.
The music has a variety of different moods, tempos and timbres, generally it's more ethereal painting than hectic burning. The combination of varied compositions and improvisations, strong melodies, rich harmonies, breathily swinging rhythms and colourful orchestrations with subtle nuances create an organic unity that was chosen as the best Finnish jazz CD of 2001 by the "Jazz-Emma" -prize.
